Lorna

"I really don't like the idea necessarily of claiming a land mass.

But I know who claims me. I know who would welcome me home."

Lorna Richards was born May 3rd, 1962 in Handsworth, Birmingham, England. She has an older sister, a younger brother and a deceased half-sister. Her parents, both born in Jamaica, travelled to England where they got married and started a family.

Just before Lorna turned 12, her family emigrated to Canada where they first lived in the Lawrence and Kingston Road area of Scarborough. They later purchased a house in Malton where they lived until Lorna was in Grade 8 and then they moved to Barrie. Lorna said she had a run in the first day of school and was given the reputation of being "The tough Black girl from Toronto" not to be messed with. She said she wore it as a badge of honour.

Listen to Lorna as she shares parts of her and her parents' journey of being Black in Canada.
