"The more I learn about Black culture, the more I really appreciate that my mom moved me form Toronto back to Woodstock where we lived with our giant family."

Thandiwe Jelani McCarthy, was born on February 9, 1987 in Toronto, Ontario. However, he spent his early school years in New Brunswick. Thandiwe is an only child but his mother comes form a family of eight siblings so he grew up with a lot of cousins.

Thandiwe is a spoken word artist and poet who had lots of thoughts to share about many topics, including the racism he faced in school, systemic racism, interactions with police, male privilege, and his "Black Hair Chronicles".

Thandiwe has written a new piece in response to the death of George Floyd titled "Enough". Check out his piece on the Artists" Works page. You can follow Thandiwe on Instagram @the1blackpoet, his blog on medium and his writings for the Nova Scotia Advocate.
